RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS
The philosophy guiding the OCAHRC Residential Services Program is the belief that all services MUST be developed in accordance with each person's unique needs, interests and desires. To this end, homes with a variety of supports are located in over 15 locations throughout Orange County. AHRC was the first agency in New York State to be chosen by parents to develop a home for their children through the NYSCARES initiative. Since then, two more groups of Orange County parents have chosen AHRC to develop homes for their children.
Residential services currently offered include:
- Community Residences (CR) & Individual Residential Alternatives (IRA): CR’s and IRA’s are designed for people who do not routinely require on-site clinical services. All individuals residing in a CR or IRA are encouraged to actively participate, along with their families, in the development of their program plan. Through this participation, individuals exercise the opportunity to shape their own futures by deciding what they would like and need to learn. All OCAHRC CR’s and IRA’s offer 24-hour/day supervision from trained staff.
- Supportive Apartments: The apartments require the greatest level of independence on the part of the individual residing in an OMRDD-certified home. As in the supervised residences, individuals play an active role in their program planning. However, significantly more time is spent independently of staff. Training typically focuses on skill attainment in areas such as advanced budgeting, meal preparation and food procurement, emergency procedures, and recreational planning in the community. Individuals who reside in the apartments are encouraged to obtain competitive employment in the community
